2026 BAFL RULES

Morton Hogs tackle football teams compete in the Bloomington Area Football League. The rules below apply to tackle football teams in 3rd through 8th grade for the 2026 season.

This page provides a summary of the rules families and coaches will use most frequently. Except where specifically modified by BAFL, games will follow IHSA football rules.

The complete BAFL rulebook remains the official authority if a question or disagreement occurs.

Quick Rule Summary

Quarter Length: All games use 9-minute quarters.

Game Clock: Games use a stopped clock following IHSA rules.

Timeouts: Each team receives three timeouts per half.

Overtime: Each team receives one possession from the opponent’s 10-yard line. If the game remains tied after both possessions, the game ends in a tie.

Ball-Carrier Weight Limits: BAFL does not use ball-carrier weight restrictions.

Football Sizes:

  • 3rd through 5th Grade: K2 or Size 5
  • 6th and 7th Grade: TDJ or Size 7
  • 8th Grade: TDY or Size 8

General Rules: Games follow IHSA football rules unless a rule is specifically modified by BAFL.

Running Clock:

  • A running clock begins when a team leads by 35 or more points during the first half.
  • A running clock begins when a team leads by 25 or more points during the second half.

Special Teams:

  • 3rd through 5th Grade do not have live kickoffs or punts.
  • 6th Grade has live kickoffs, but punts are not live.
  • 7th and 8th Grade play live kickoffs and punts.

Point-After-Touchdown Attempts:

  • A run or pass is worth 2 points at every grade level.
  • A kicked PAT is worth 2 points in 3rd through 5th Grade.
  • A kicked PAT is worth 1 point in 6th through 8th Grade.
